Real Dippers: Sam

Who are you and where do you dip?
I'm Sam & I dip mainly in the sea in Eastbourne where I live & love a cold plunge bath at the local beach sauna too.

Your favourite time of day/season/weather for swimming?
I dip all year round & especially love early mornings & winter sunrises as they aren't too early!! Love the colder sea temps as its so exhilarating!

How cold does the water get where you swim and how does it make you feel?

I think the coldest we had was 5° a couple of years ago in February. The feeling of the cold water on your skin as you step into the sea is so amazing. It's so much fun jumping in with fellow dippers whooping & laughing. Its pure joy on everyones faces. Love the all over tingly feeling once you are fully immersed. Finishing off with a couple of head dunks just makes the whole experience. Mentally It definitely flicks a happy switch on after a cold water dip & 100% helps with my aches pains & inflammation.

How long have you been wild swimming?
8 years swimming through the winter but have always loved being in the sea.

How did you start, what got you to try it?
I've always swum in the sea late spring & summer & met someone on the beach who said they swam all year round so I joined in & never looked back!! Best decision ever.

What were you worried about before you started dipping?
Nothing really. Just always been aware of beach & sea safety - waves wind temperatures etc & keeping warm after extremely cold dips. Always open to tips & advice from fellow dippers.

Worst moment being knocked over by a wave & pulling a tendon in my groin. Never turn your back on the waves.

Every dip is a best moment because it makes you feel so good. I've met the most amazing supportive people since I've been dipping. We have built the loveliest sea dipping community & I've made life long friends.
